@ 5/31 Memorial in Virginia Beach, VA

I walked the 5/31 Memorial site today for the 50th+ time, trying to see it with fresh eyes. I look at all the familiar details we’ve designed, documented and that now have been built, imagining how someone visiting for the first time will see it. What will catch their eye? Does anything need to be adjusted so that it doesn’t detract from their experience of the memorial? As our team’s work on the project wraps up, the memorial’s work as a place of remembrance and honor for our community is just beginning.

About the 5/31 Memorial

The 5/31 Memorial in Virginia Beach honors the 12 lives lost on May 31, 2019, while recognizing the survivors, first responders, and community forever affected by the tragedy. Designed as a place of remembrance, reflection, and healing, the memorial moves through a preserved woodland landscape and includes the victims’ lifelines, Survivors’ Grove, Hero Tree, reflecting pool, and a place of honor bearing the names of the 12 individuals who lost their lives.
