Elizabeth River Project
Along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia, the Fred W. Beazley River Academy serves as a hub for environmental education and community connection. Long used by the Elizabeth River Project to engage students and residents in understanding and protecting their local watershed, the renewed Academy builds carefully on what exists. A new addition—connected to the original building by a covered pavilion—introduces a lecture hall and outdoor classrooms that support hands-on learning and gathering, with integrated landscape strategies, and ADA-accessible spaces that strengthen a lasting relationship between the community and the river.
